Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
  • 8 ounces mascarpone cheese
  • 1 cup brewed espresso, cooled
  • 1 tablespoon coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 24 ladyfingers
  • Cocoa powder for dusting
  • Dark chocolate shavings for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together egg yolks and sugar until pale and thick. Gradually whisk in milk and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened and bubbling. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in the mascarpone cheese until smooth. Then fold in the cooled egg mixture until fully combined.
  3. In a shallow dish, combine the brewed espresso and coffee liqueur. Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the espresso mixture, ensuring they are soaked but not soggy.
  4. In a 9×9 inch dish, layer half of the dipped ladyfingers on the bottom. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers. Repeat with the remaining ladyfingers and mascarpone mixture.
  5. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight for best flavor.
  6. Before serving, dust with cocoa powder and garnish with chocolate shavings if desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute coffee liqueur with vanilla extract if preferred.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, omit the liqueur entirely.
  • Tiramisu can be made a day in advance to allow flavors to meld.
