Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup add-ins (chocolate chips, dried fruit, nuts, etc.)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the heavy cream, egg, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the cream mixture into the flour mixture and stir until just combined. Gently fold in your choice of add-ins.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until it comes together. Pat into a circle about 1-inch thick.
- Cut into wedges or use a biscuit cutter to cut out rounds and place on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- For a sweeter scone, add an extra tablespoon of sugar.
- Try adding lemon zest or spices like cinnamon for added flavor.
- Store leftover scones in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
