  • Author: ushinzomr

Description

This blooming onion recipe made in the air fryer is a healthier version of the classic deep-fried dish. Crispy, flavorful, and perfect for dipping, it’s a crowd-pleaser for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Cooking spray
  • Dipping sauce of your choice

Instructions

  1. Cut the top off the onion and peel the outer layers. Cut the onion downwards in a star pattern, creating petals.
  2. In a bowl, mix the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Dip the onion in the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off, then coat it with the flour mixture, ensuring all petals are covered.
  4. After coating with flour, dip the onion back into the buttermilk, then coat it with breadcrumbs.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Spray the onion with cooking spray for a crispy texture.
  6. Place the onion in the air fryer basket and cook for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add your favorite seasonings to the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Make sure the onion is fully coated for the best texture.
  • Serve immediately for the best crunch.
