Description
This nourishing beef bone broth is rich in flavor and nutrients, perfect for sipping on its own or using as a base for soups and stews.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds beef bones (such as marrow bones, oxtails, or knuckles)
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 large onion, quartered
- 2 carrots, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 4 garlic cloves, smashed
- 10 cups water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
- 2 bay leaves
- Fresh herbs (like thyme or parsley) for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Spread the beef bones on a baking sheet and roast in the oven for 30-40 minutes, or until browned.
- In a large stockpot, combine the roasted bones, apple cider vinegar, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, and water.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer.
- Add salt, peppercorns, and bay leaves. Cover and let simmer for at least 12 hours, ideally 24 hours, adding more water if needed to keep the bones submerged.
- Once done, strain the broth through a fine-mesh sieve into a large bowl or pot, discarding the solids.
- Let the broth cool, then transfer to jars or containers. The broth can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week or frozen for several months.
- Garnish with fresh herbs before serving, if desired.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can add additional aromatics like leeks or mushrooms.
- Using a slow cooker or Instant Pot can also simplify the cooking process.
- You can skim off any fat that solidifies on the surface after refrigerating if you prefer a leaner broth.
